AIMS Mohali) celebrated DNA Day

The Department of Biochemistry and Pediatrics at Dr BR Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS Mohali) celebrated DNA Day with a series of engaging activities, today. DNA Day commemorates the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA by James Watson and Francis Crick in 1953, a landmark achievement that revolutionized our understanding of life. DNA Day celebrations featured a variety of events designed to educate and inspire the fascinating world of DNA.

An E-poster competition was organized by the department of Biochemistry for the first year MBBS students on the topics related to molecular biology. The Chief Guest Dr. Archana Bhatnagar, Professor, Department of Biochemistry, Punjab University expressed heartfelt appreciation for the exemplary efforts invested in organizing the event and commended the participants for their enthusiasm and dedication to advancing scientific knowledge.

Talented students showcased their scientific acumen and creativity, fostering a spirit of enthusiasm and camaraderie.  The winning e-poster, titled ” DNA Finger Printing “ captivated the judges Dr Shalini, Dr Maneesha , and Dr Archana  with its innovative approach, clarity of presentation, and insightful content. Through meticulous design and compelling visuals, the poster effectively conveyed complex scientific concepts related to DNA Finger Printing, engaging students and fostering a deeper understanding of the subject matter.

In addition, renowned geneticist and researcher Dr Priyanka Srivastava from Advanced Paediatrics Centre, PGIMER delivered an  engaging talk, delving deeper into the complexities of DNA and its role in decoding genetic tests.

Life size DNA model crafted with accuracy, highlighting the sugar-phosphate backbone and the paired nitrogenous bases (adenine, guanine, cytosine, and thymine) that hold the genetic code was displayed, allowing students and visitors to truly appreciate the intricate structure of this molecule. Adding a touch of cultural flair, Rangoli designs creatively depicted DNA structures using colourful patterns.

In the concluding remarks by the Director Principal AIMS Mohali, Dr Bhavneet Bharti underscored the paramount importance of celebrating DNA day, highlighting the profound impact of Genetics and Personalized medicine on shaping the future of health care.
