Who is Dhananjay? JNU Student Union’s first Dalit President after 1996

The Left party swept the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Students’ Union Election, winning all four seats.The polling for the JNUSU elections was held on Friday, March 22 this year. JNU got its next students’ union after a gap of four years.

Dhananjay from the Left was chosen as the President, beating ABVP’s Umesh Chandra Ajmeera. He got 2598 votes and was declared the winner by Shailendra Kumar, the Chairperson of the Election Committee at JNU.

Who is Dhananjay?

Dhananjay, a PhD student from the School of Arts and Aesthetics, is a native of Bihar’s Gaya.

Dhananjay is the first Dalit JNUSU president since Batti Lal Bairwa, who won in 1996.

In an interview after the victory of JNSU polls, Dhananjay was quoted stating that victory is a referendum by the students of JNU that they reject the politics of hate and violence.

“This is a win for the students…The students have elected the Left against the fraud & funds being cut by the government…”

He added that the students have once again shown their trust in us. We will continue to fight for their rights and work on issues that concern students,.

Dhananjay expressed that scholarship hike, the safety of women on campus, fund cuts, and infrastructural and water crises will be his core agenda as the president of JNU’s students union.
