Chandigarh, April 27

The bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Pami Dinghatnam Sri Narasimha has rejected the petition filed in the Supreme Court regarding the cancelation of the Karnal Assembly by-election and has ordered to continue the by-election.

It is noteworthy that Karnal resident Kunal Channa had filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court challenging the by-election and saying that this by-election is unconstitutional. The double bench of the High Court, while giving its verdict on 3 April 2024, rejected the petition and ordered to continue the by-election.

Kunal Channa had approached the Supreme Court against the order of the High Court, on which a hearing was held in the Supreme Court on Friday, 26 April 2024 and orders were given to continue the Karnal Assembly by-election, and his petition was rejected.

Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini is a contender for the post of BJP MLA from Karnal Assembly. After the resignation of former Chief Minister Manohar Lal, the Election Commission announced a by-election for the Karnal Assembly seat against which a petition was filed in the High Court and Supreme Court.

Karnal resident Sheeshpal Rana said that Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, Senior Advocate Manendra Singh, and Special Additional Advocate General Lokesh Sinhal presented the case on behalf of the Election Commission of India.

After hearing the arguments of both parties, the Supreme Court rejected the petition and passed orders to continue the by-election.
