Work on first non-motorised green corridor in UT starts

​​In order to achieve Chandigarh as green, clean and smart city,  the Groundbreaking Ceremony of 1st Non-Motorized Transport (NMT) Green Corridor of Chandigarh City was performed by Dr. Dharam Pal, IAS Worthy Adviser to the Administrator, U.T., Chandigarh today in the presence of Sh.Anup Gupta, Mayor, U.T., Chandigarh Dr. Vijay N. Zade, IAS, Secretary Engineering, Sh. C.B. Ojha, Chief Engineer, U.T., Sh. Kapil Setia, Chief Architect, U.T. and other senior officers of the Chandigarh Administration.

This 8 Km. long corridor with lighting facility will connect Capitol Complex to Sector 56, Chandigarh, which will run along N-Choe from north to south of the city.  The work will be completed in 9 months time.  The construction of NMT Green Corridor aims to provide sustainable and eco-friendly modes of transportation, while creating a safer and more accessible environment for pedestrians and cyclists. This 1st NMT Green Corridor project is a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions and improving the overall quality of life for city residents by designating a specific route exclusively for non-motorized transport, the Chandigarh Administration aims to encourage and facilitate active modes of transportation, such as walking and cycling, thus reducing reliance on fossil fuel-powered vehicles.

Total 11 NMT Green Corridors are proposed to be constructed connecting northern to southern part of the city.  In this context the work of Ist NMT Green Corridor started, which will be completed within 9 months time.  The site survey/feasibility report of 2nd NMT Green Corridor is being done jointly by the Department of Urban Planning and Engineering Department, U.T. in the month of June, 2023. The tender for the 2nd NMT Corridor shall likely to be invited in the month of July, 2023 and the work is going to start in August, 2023.

The AAUT has finally directed to complete the feasibility study/survey of the remaining 9 NMT Corridors in a time-bound manner so that work on all remaining 9 corridors can be started in phased manner.  The construction of NMT Corridor was started with tree plantation by the worthy Adviser to the Administrator, U.T., Chandigarh along Mayor, U.T. and other officers of the Chandigarh Admn. to meet with the Green Action Plan as already proposed by the Chandigarh Admn. for the year 2023-24.

Adviser to the Administrator, U.T., Chandigarh also inspected the existing sports facilities available in the Sports Complex, Sector 42 and directed to Sports Department to upgrade the various sports facilities, so that international/national tournaments can be held. These facilities can be used for holding of major events in the city which will be beneficial to the upcoming athletes/sport persons of the tricity.
