Ludhiana, December 6

In consonance with the ‘Clean and Green PAU Campus’ drive of Punjab Agricultural University, two e-rickshaws donated by a city-based cycle manufacturer, Avon Cycles Pvt. Ltd., were flagged off in the presence of Dr Satbir Singh Gosal, Vice-Chancellor of PAU, Onkar Singh Pahwa, Chairman and Managing Director of Avon Cycles Pvt. Ltd., Rishi Singh Pahwa, MD of Avon Cycles, Mandeep Pawha, Director of Avon Cycles and officers of the university. The University now has a fleet of six e-rickshaws for commuting within the campus for free.

Focusing on carbon-neutrality, Dr Gosal said that the electric vehicle revolution is waiting in wings to happen. The availability of fossil fuels is limited, and their use is destroying our planet.

Driving an electric vehicle can help reduce the carbon footprint with zero tailpipe emissions. Their silent functioning capability due to no engine under the hood means no noise. The running and maintenance cost of an electric vehicle is also much lower than an equivalent petrol or diesel vehicle, he explained.

Delving on academia-industry collaborations, Dr Gosal opined that while the academic ecosystem provides advanced yet frugal solutions for societal improvement, industry offers the activation energy and resources to deliver these to beneficiaries at the grass root level.

The happy marriage between the solution-providing strength of academia and transformational capability of industry can create empowering solutions. He appreciated the donors for their sensitivity towards the environment in general and PAU in particular.

He said these baby steps by each one of us would ultimately help us realize the dream of achieving net-zero emissions as per international scientific consensus.

O.S. Pahwa emphasized that quality education, skill development solutions, game-changing rural reforms, ecological and sustainable sanitation or next groundbreaking technology are all achievable if we are committed to breaking down our silos.

Consequential teaming of academia and corporate is a great way to multiply the impact on social development and derive a better social return on investment. As an integral part of the business enterprise, Avon Cycles would always contribute to make substantial improvements in the social framework of Ludhiana community of which PAU is an indispensable component, he remarked.

Rishi Pahwa observed that academia-industry alliance to support important initiatives would go a long way in creating measurable transformation the society deserves. As two heads are better than one, such partnerships should be cemented to redefine education and give back to society, he added.

PAU, popularly known as the lungs of Ludhiana, looks forward to more such philanthropists and industrialists willing to make a change.
