Ludhiana, May 4

District Election Officer Sakshi Sawhney on Friday warned that the district administration will take severe action if it finds anyone attempting to mislead the administration while seeking exemptions from poll duties. She stated that as per Section 159 of the Representation of People’s Act 1951, it is mandatory for every appointed official to attend training sessions and perform their assigned election duties. This legal provision ensures that all officials contribute to the smooth and fair conduct of the elections.

Sawhney emphasized that exemptions from election duties should not be sought on frivolous or unsubstantiated grounds, and strict action will be taken under the relevant sections of the Representation of People’s Act, alongside departmental disciplinary measures, against any individuals attempting to avoid these duties on misleading grounds.

The District Election Officer mentioned that there might be officials who, due to severe medical conditions, are unable to perform these duties. To ensure that only people with genuine health problems are exempted from poll duty, a medical board has been constituted to ensure screening of such applicants. She made it clear that legal proceedings would be initiated against anyone found using a fake medical certificate, along with the makers of the certificates.

Sawhney said that any sort of negligence on the part of poll staff to join duty will be dealt with severely, and appropriate action will be taken against the employees indulging in such malpractices. Any reluctance on the part of the employees to join this ‘national service’ will not be tolerated.

The District Election Officer also mentioned that female employees are now entitled to perform their duties within the same constituency, alleviating logistical concerns and promoting their greater participation in the electoral process. For any inquiries or assistance regarding duty assignments during the elections, anyone can contact the appropriate authorities in Court Room 2 of ADC (G) Major Amit Sareen in District Administrative Complex, here.
