PM Narendra Modi tenders resignation, may take oath on June 8

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, met the President today and tendered his resignation along with the Council of Ministers.

The President has accepted the resignation and requested Shri Narendra Modi and the Council of Ministers to continue till the new Government assumes office.

On June 8 evening Modi is probably going to take the oath of office as prime minister for a third term in a row. Though the BJP was unable to secure a majority on its own, the NDA managed to gain 292 seats, narrowly missing the majority threshold.

After former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Modi will be the second leader to hold office for a third term if the NDA forms the government.

Leading members of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), are expected to meet this evening to assess the outcomes of the Lok Sabha elections and discuss the specifics of forming a government.

Leading members of the BJP and its allies are also anticipated to be present at the meeting, which will be attended by JD(U) chairman and Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, as well as TDP president and soon-to-be Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu.

In the 543-member Lok Sabha, the NDA easily leads with 272 votes, while the BJP has not reached the magic number for the first time since 2014 it must rely on its partners to form a government.

The TDP, JD(U), Shiv Sena, led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and the LJP (Ram Vilas), led by Chirag Paswan, have secured 16, 12, 7, and 5 seats, respectively, and will be significant players in the formation of the administration.
