The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has entered into an agreement with SAS GLOBAL SOLAR, Sangrur for commercialization of a Modified PAU fixed Dome Type Janta Model Biogas Plant, having capacity from 25 m3/day to 500 m3/day technology designed and developed under the ‘All India Coordinated Research Project on Energy in Agriculture & Agro-based Industries (AICRP on EAAI)’, funded by ICAR.
As per the agreement, the University offers non-exclusive rights to the above-mentioned firm for making Modified PAU fixed Dome Type Janta Model Biogas Plant having a capacity from 25 m3/day to 500 m3/day within India.
Dr. Jaskarn Singh Mahal, Estate Officer, PAU, congratulated Dr. Rajan Aggarwal, Head, Department of Renewable Energy Engineering and Dr. Sarbjit Singh Sooch, Principal Scientist, for developing the technology.
Dr. Aggarwal said that animal waste (cattle dung, poultry droppings etc.) can be digested anaerobically for the production of biogas as a fuel for thermal applications as well as for power generation.
It will help in generating a neat and clean environment as well as saving conventional fuels.
Giving details about the technology, Dr. Sooch explained that the construction of the plant requires a simple brick masonry structure. This design is suitable for all regions of the country.
The single digester of this plant may be designed for any rated capacity from 25 m3/day to 500 m3/day. The cost and maintenance of this plant is 60 – 70% lesser as compared to the cost of other conventional model biogas plants (floating drum biogas plants).
The digested material so produced from such anaerobic digestion is good quality manure ready for use in fields, he added. Informing that the life of this plant was around 25 years, he said its advantage was that the whole plant is underground.
Dr. Usha Nara, Plant Breeder, informed that PAU has signed a total of 296 MoAs and commercialized 75 technologies. She also added that 11 MoA’s of Modified PAU fixed Dome Type Janta Model Biogas Plant having capacity from 25 m3/day to 500 m3/day have been signed with different companies and firms.
