PAU holds Nutrition awareness camp

Ludhiana, January 20

The Diet Counseling Cell, Department of Food and Nutrition, College of Community Science, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), organized Nutrition Awareness Camp on “Dietary Fiber for Health” for the students, faculty, and staff of PAU in the University campus.

A total of 150 youngsters participated in this camp and got the chance to interact with the nutrition experts. The day was organized to create awareness among youngsters regarding the importance of fiber.

Dr. Kiran Bains, Professor, and Head, of the Department of Food and Nutrition, motivated the students and faculty to organize such activities and create awareness among youths for better health of the community.

Dr. Bains expressed concern over youngsters becoming more prone to processed foods that are extremely low in dietary fiber. “The dietary fiber helps to maintain gut health and in preventing metabolic disorders such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and several types of cancers,” she added.

Dr. Jaswinder K. Brar, Professor, Department of Food and Nutrition and Organizer of the camp, informed that the camp created a great opportunity for the students as well as the visitors to head towards “Healthy you” by making better food choices in their life. The participants were also told about high-fiber traditional Punjabi diets and their role in maintaining good health, she said.

The students of the department analyzed the body composition of the participants and based on their fat mass and muscle mass, they were suggested appropriate diet plans. Fun games, dissolving myths, displaying of fiber-rich foods and nutritional counseling were the key features of the awareness camp.
