Old and large fishes to be removed from Sukhna Lake Chandigarh

Chandigarh, March 13

The Department of Animal Husbandry & Fisheries is undertaking the activity of removal of old and large fishes from Sukhna Lake from March 13-22, 2023 under the guidance of Vinod P Kavle, Secretary Animal Husbandry & Fisheries, to maintain ecological balance of Sukhna in consultation with Forest Department, Chandigarh and Zoology Department of Panjab University, Chandigarh.

The aim of this activity is to better the ecological management of Sukhna, which is a small lake and is unlike larger water bodies or flowing water. Such lakes have their own specific requirements of ecological management of flaura and fauna which are very sensitive to changes. The removal of big size fishes will also allow better feeding availability of small fishes for migratory birds, which are omnivorous in nature. The activity of removal of big fishes from Sukhna Lake is carried out after recommendations of Forest Department as unusual mortality was reported in last rainy season.

The fishing will be conducted with gill nets of a specific mesh size not less than 6 cm from knot to knot so that small fishes may get protected. The nets will be deployed at night (08.00 PM to 06.00 AM) so as to avoid public inconvenience and not interfere in recreational activities of public & daily walker’s routine. The area of fishing will be specific and will be towards the regulatory ends.

Further to rejuvenate Sukhna Lake fish and fauna, new fish seed shall be released in coming days in consultation with experts and new varieties of fishes will be reared.
