Mallikarjun Kharge elected Congress president; party gets its first non-Gandhi chief in 24 years

Defeating his rival Shashi Tharoor, Mallikarjun Kharge has now become the new Congress President today. Soon after the results were announced, the Hashtag in the name of Mallikarjun Kharge started trending on Twitter. Under the hashtag, many people shared funny memes about Kharge. The hashtag received over 2,197 tweets from netizens. Under the hashtag, many people shared congratulatory messages on Twitter.

Notably, Kharge got 7,897 votes while Thiruvananthapuram MP Tharoor secured only 1,072 votes. He will now take place of the President Sonia Gandhi to lead the Congress Party. Kharge is going to become the new party chief outside the Gandhi family after 24 years when Sitaram Kesri held the position in 1998.
