“In a democracy, the highest office is the office of citizen,” said Justice Felix Frankfurter. And we are witnessing that ‘citizen’ moment as India prepares itself for the sixth phase of Lok Sabha elections of 2024. In the earlier five phases, the nation witnessed enthusiastic and inclusive participation in its democratic journey. In the latest phase, 8.95 crore electors across 49 Lok Sabha seats were eligible to vote in 94 thousand polling stations spread over 8 States/UTs.
In this phase, the spirited participation of various segments of society, including youth, divyang, and first-time voters, underscores the inclusive spirit of the electoral process. People came in traditional dresses and duty uniforms to celebrate the festival of democracy, adding a vibrant cultural hue to this important event.
While counting will take place on June 4, we are yet to witness two more phases of polls in this battle of ideologies in this multiparty, pluralistic democracy which gives chance to the lowest denominator to overthrow the mightiest.
