Centre revises MGNREGA rates after a go ahead from the Election Commission, Haryana tops, Punjab on 8th place

The Union government has notified the revised wages under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), with several States reporting an average hike in wages by 8 to 10%. The rates will be applicable from April 01 and Haryana tops the chart offering best wages at 374 per day also offered by three gram panchayats in Sikkim. Punjab is offering Rs 322 per day wages. The lowest wages are offered by Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh at Rs 234 per day. Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand are offering Rs 237.

The hike ranges from ₹7 in Uttar Pradesh (2023- ₹230 – to 2024 rate of ₹237) to ₹34 hike in Goa (2023 wages ₹322 to 2024 wages ₹356). Similarly significant hikes in wages have been reported by Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Goa, where the hikes varied from 8% to 10.5%. Bihar follows closely behind, where the wages have been revised by ₹17.

Though Punjab has seen a hike of Rs 19 but the workers have dismissed it as an eyewash seeking minimum wages of 1000 rupees per day citing inflation .The unions have sought a six day week and work guarantee of over 300 days across the year.  According to senior officials, the Rural Development ministry has sought permission from the Election Commission of India to notify the wage rates as the model code of conduct is in force across the country for the General Elections. It notified the wages after obtaining the clearance as the revision is a routine exercise.
