To protect the rights of foreign workers, Canada has announced new amendments to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations.
Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) have together announced 13 amendments designed to strengthen the protection of foreign workers under the Temporary Foreign Workers Program. As per ESDC, these regulations will be temporary foreign workers from abuse and mistreatment.
The new amendments mandates employers to provide all TFWs with information about their rights in Canada. It prohibits reprisal by employers against workers, for instance against those who come forward with complaints.
It further prohibits employers from charging recruitment fees to workers and hold them accountable for the actions of recruiters in this regard.
It is to be noted that temporary foreign worker have the same rights and workplace protections as Canadians and permanent residents.
