SAS Nagar, September 20

Bir Devinder Singh, former Deputy Speaker Punjab Vidhan Sabha while condemning Chandigarh University’s viral videos row has demanded high court-monitored probe into the matter.

“The chilling accounts of the Girls Hostel of a private Chandigarh University, at village Gharuan in District SAS Nagar, appearing on the visual media is shocking to my ethics. The horrific incident of making obscene videos of female students, while bathing in the Hostel’s bathrooms, is outrageously scandalous and having grave implication for the future career of the female students, who have been allegedly video –graphed. The appalling incident reflects very poorly on the irresponsible management of the Private University found slumbering in such a ghastly incident,” said Bir Devinder.

“I wonder why the bathrooms of women’s hostel were kept unrestrainedly open and ajar from the top without covering with the rooftop and thus unashamedly exposing the bathing female students for any mischief? The management of the university has evidently committed a gross error in utter disregard of the safety and security of the female students, who have paid quite hefty fees to the university,” he added.

Bir Devinder added all such glaring discrepancies, related to the safety and security of the female students were conveniently “overlooked” by the Chairperson of State Women Commission.

“Munisha Ghulati, who at the time of her visit to the Chandigarh University, spend more time, defending the management of the Private University without making thorough enquiry and visiting the inmates of the women’s hostel where mischief was allegedly committed. Her detestable running commentary, exonerating and praising the University on the spot, despite the obscene and immoral activities of unspeakable crime, caused panic attack to many students who were residing in the Girls Hostel of the University in question.Even the categorical statement of Senior police officers, claiming that nothing objectionable has happened accept one video sent by the culprit to her friend at Shimla was ahead of time and professionally untenable. I wonder why the entire administration was in a tearing hurry to hush up the matter under the carpet, without even waiting for the conclusive report of the investigation and also without the findings of the forensic examination of the videos allegedly sent to a boy at Shimla. I am of the view that the half-baked inconclusive statements of the senior police officers in the matter has markedly weaken the strength of the FIR registered at PS Kharar in this connection. It particularly sounded ridiculous at a time when one of viral video of the warden of the Girls hostel, Rajwinder Kaur, was being prominently shown on the electronic media, scolding the Girl Student, who allegedly made the obscene videos and ironically enough the same girl was seen admitting her guilt before the warden. So, in the light of the above facts, the categorical statement of the police was not digestible and the massive cover up operation was comically evident till the students of the Chandigarh University called off their protest around midnight yesterday,” he added.

“Since the matter is too sensitive, relating to the dignity and safety of the Girls Students and the cover up operation to hide and suppress the facts, seemingly on full swing, despite the evidence of many viral videos on the social media and electronic media, showing the Girl students screaming and shouting in panic reaction in the campus and some of them were being taken for medical help in the ambulance, so in view of the above dubious circumstances; I’m of the humble view that only the high court-monitored transparent probe would do justice in the matter and shall bring the entire truth of the murky episode, on the surface,” former Deputy Speaker added.
