Why not bring a white paper on drugs in Punjab? Warring asks CM

Bathinda, June 4

Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring today suggested to the Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to bring out a ‘White Paper’ on the drug situation in Punjab, instead of beating around the bush and hiding behind the words.

After meeting the members of the anti-drug committee in village Bhai Bhkataur and a local hospital, Warring referred to the Aam Aadmi Party government and Chief Minister’s claims that the drug pedaling had been controlled in Punjab.

“First of all they should admit that they had set an unrealistic deadline of finishing drugs from Punjab and now they have agreed that drugs have not been completely finished, so why not bring out a ‘White Paper’ and spell out everything in black and white”, he suggested to the Chief Minister.

The PCC president maintained that the problem of drugs in Punjab is too serious and too deep rooted to be finished by registration of a few hundred FIRs or demolishing the houses of a few peddlers.

“Mere addressing the symptoms, without dealing with the root cause is not going to solve the problem”, he said, while pointing out that even the governments before the AAP, like those of the Congress and the Aklai-BJP had made similar promises and similar claims but not much was achieved on the ground.

Referring to the attack on an ex-serviceman Ranveer Singh, who is a member of the anti-drug committee of village Bhai Bhaktaur and the intimidation of another member Lakhbir, Warring said, this speaks of the audacity of the peddlers and suppliers, which is not possible without the government patronage.

He disclosed that one of the members of the anti-drug committee had told him that he was even being threatened with slapping an FIR if he did not stop exposing the peddlers through his social media posts.

The PCC president disclosed that he had specially travelled to meet them and express his party’s solidarity with them. He assured them that the Congress will always stand by them in their fight against drugs.
