Pune Porsche Crash: Teen Driver’s Father, Few Pub Owners Taken Into Custody

Published by: factnews

The Pune Police has confirmed that the father of the 17-year-old boy involved in a deadly car accident that claimed two lives has been taken into custody. The owners of a few pubs where the minor was given alcohol have also been taken into custody.

The incident happened in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar neighborhood in the wee hours of Sunday morning. Anis Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta were killed instantly when their luxury Porsche, driven by a 17-year-old, collided with a motorcycle, according to police reports. CCTV footage of the collision showed the car was moving in a narrow lane at an estimated 200 kmph.

The Pune Police’s crime branch has now taken up the case. Pune police have charged the boy’s father under sections 75 and 77 of the Juvenile Justice Act and are awaiting a decision from the sessions court. These sections deal with giving intoxicating substances to a minor and willful neglect of a child, respectively.

IT engineers Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta were riding back from a get-together when the speeding Porsche struck their bike from behind at 2:15 in the morning. They both passed away right away.

Amitesh Kumar, the Commissioner of Police in Pune, claims that the young driver of the vehicle was celebrating his class 12 results at a nearby bar when the collision occurred. In Maharashtra, the legal drinking age is 25, so serving him is against the law. As a result, the bar owners are also prosecuted for providing alcohol to underage customers.

Strong public outcry has followed the incident, especially after the Juvenile Justice Board decided to grant the minor bail only 15 hours after he was arrested. A 300-word essay on road safety, a de-addiction programme, and mandatory counseling were among the rehabilitative requirements that the board imposed. Considering the seriousness of the accident, many have criticised this accommodating response.

Pune police have petitioned the sessions court to try the minor as an adult in response to the bail decision. This action is based on the conviction that the seriousness of the offense calls for more stringent judicial review. “We have not forgotten what happened yesterday. Since it was a horrible crime, we have taken action under section 304 of the IPC, which is not subject to bail,” Commissioner Kumar stated.
