Canada tops overseas deaths of Indian students

In answer to a query on Thursday, the Ministery of External Affairs (MEA) disclosed the Rajya Sabha that Canada has the greatest number of Indian student deaths overseas (91) since 2018.

The House was informed by V. Muraleedharan, the minister of state in the Ministry of External Affairs, that 403 Indian students have died while pursuing their studies overseas since 2018.

After Canada, the UK (48), Russia (40), the US (36), and Australia (35) had the highest number of student deaths, inormed the minister.

A total of 5,67,607 Indians traveled overseas to study in Canada between 2018 and 2022, according to statistics the MEA provided to the Rajya Sabha in February 2023.

The Print reported that Canada recorded the highest number of Indian student deaths abroad (91) since 2018, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) told Rajya Sabha in response to a question Thursday.

V. Muraleedharan, minister of state in the Minister of External Affairs, told the House that since 2018, there have been 403 recorded deaths of Indian students studying abroad. These deaths are due to number of reasons that include natural causes, accidents, and medical conditions, the data showed.
