Taking note of threat perception disclosed by senior Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, the Punjab and Haryana High Court (HC) on Friday directed Punjab to take all corrective measures, including provision of suitable security, and pass appropriate order within a month.
The Bench of Justice Raj Mohan Singh said that if the threat perception — that notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi has revealed that two politicians, including Sidhu, are on his target list, — is found to be genuine, then the competent authority shall proceed to take all corrective steps.
The Bench also made it clear that this provision, however, is subject to final assessment to be made by the competent authority on the basis of further inputs to be received from concerned quarter and after analysing the inputs provided by the petitioner in his pleadings in accordance with law. Adding that security is a state subject and the court interference should be minimal, the Bench added that on receipt of such inputs from the petitioner, the competent authority shall take appropriate action.
Sidhu had moved the HC seeking direction to Punjab to restore his Z+ security, which was reduced to Y+ without any notice issued to him.
During the proceedings of the matter, threat perception report from the Central Agency addressed to Additional Director General of Police, Security, Punjab was received by the HC, wherein it has been mentioned that as of now, the authority does not have any specific input regarding any threat to the petitioner.
