Fact News Service

New Delhi: Bangladesh’s senior all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has announced his retirement from T20 internationals, signaling the end of an era for one of the country’s most celebrated cricketers. In a heartfelt press conference ahead of the second Test against India, Shakib hinted that this match in Kanpur could also mark his final appearance in red-ball cricket. He expressed a deep desire to conclude his Test career on home soil in Mirpur, stating, “I have expressed my desire to play my last Test in Mirpur; if that doesn’t happen, the second Test against India would be my last.” With palpable emotion, he reflected on his journey, saying, “Bangladesh cricket has given me so much, and I want to give my last in this format at home.”

Shakib’s connection to India runs deep; his Test debut came against them in Chattogram back in May 2007. Over his illustrious career, he has played 70 Tests, amassing 4,600 runs, including five centuries and 31 half-centuries. This remarkable tally places him as the third-highest run-scorer in Bangladesh’s Test history—an accolade he is likely to retain as he prepares to hang up his boots.

On the bowling front, Shakib has etched his name in the annals of Bangladesh cricket as the all-time leading wicket-taker in Test matches, with an impressive 242 wickets. He remains the only bowler from the country to exceed the 200-wicket mark, further solidifying his legacy as one of Bangladesh’s finest all-rounders.

In addition to his Test retirement, Shakib had previously hinted at stepping away from T20 internationals during the T20 World Cup, and he confirmed this decision during the same press conference. Throughout his T20I career, Shakib played 129 matches, scoring 2,551 runs at a strike rate of 121.18. His bowling prowess was equally notable; in 126 innings, he claimed 149 wickets, just shy of the coveted 150 mark, with his best figures being a remarkable 5/20. His final outing for Bangladesh came during the T20 World Cup, when he faced Afghanistan in the Super Eights stage in June.

As Shakib prepares to transition into retirement, his contributions to Bangladeshi cricket will be remembered fondly by fans and players alike. His legacy, both as a prolific batsman and a formidable bowler, will undoubtedly inspire future generations.
