Chandigarh, May 15
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann today announced the launch of direct seeding of rice (DSR) across the state, aimed at conserving groundwater. The initiative targets 5 lakh acres of land for DSR this season, which is expected to save 15-20% of water compared to traditional methods while also reducing other cultivation costs.
To encourage farmers, the government will provide ₹1,500 per acre as financial assistance for those adopting DSR, including for basmati varieties. Additionally, the state will ensure timely canal water supply and electricity to support the initiative.
CM Mann urged farmers to adopt direct seeding to contribute to preserving Punjab’s groundwater and boost their income, fulfilling their duty towards the state’s land.
