The Punjab Congress on Monday slammed the police action against peacefully protesting Punjab Congress leaders and workers on their way to the residence of Punjab Governor, Banwarilal Purohit.
The senior leadership of Punjab Congress including President Amrinder Singh Raja Warring and the Leader of Opposition, Partap Singh Bajwa along with congress workers were on their way to the residence of the Punjab Governor to give him a memorandum relating to Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) canal when police used water cannons to disperse the Congress workers.
“Such draconian behaviour of the police will not be tolerated. We were marching peacefully to make our voices heard. Our democratic rights cannot be suppressed like this. We won’t let even a single drop of water go out of Punjab at any cost”, Bajwa added.
Addressing the media persons, Bajwa accused the Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann of working hand in glove with the BJP government in the centre.
The legal representatives of the Aam Aadmi Party government in the recent Supreme Court hearing on the SYL canal backstabbed the Punjab.
They must have sought directions from the AAP government before the hearing in which they conveyed that they were willing to construct the SYL canal but the opposition and farmers didn’t let them do the same.
“I wish to inform the governor of Punjab that Punjab has gone through a turmoil period for around 15 years and one of the leading causes was the SYL canal. I urge the governor to ensure that the state of Punjab does not plunge into turmoil and disturbance once again”, said Bajwa.
The opposition leader said that Haryana has more quantum of water than Punjab has. Haryana is already getting water from Yamuna.
“The survey for the SYL canal is not possible. Acquisition of the land has been de-notified in 2016. The farmers have started ploughing the land. Meanwhile, Haryana is not facing water scarcity at all. With the construction of the SYL canal, they are just trying to humiliate Punjab”, said LoP.
Qadian Legislator Bajwa said that the Punjab Congress will also stage a peaceful protest in front of the residence of the Punjab CM. However, he has already disappointed the Punjabis in the SC. Punjab CM has already sold his conscience.
