Education Department Punjab has issued an order to reinstate Rakesh Gupta, who was the deputy-district education officer and principal of several government educational institutions, on departmental terms. Rakesh Gupta was on Suspension from November 1, 2022. It should be noted that Rakesh Gupta, who was posted as the principal of Government Senior Cadre School Bhagowal (at the time of his arrest) and Rampal, the principal of Government Senior Secondary School Taragarh,(dist. Pathankot) were arrested by Vigilance on November 1 on charges of corruption. The case was of manipulation of funds of more than 10 lakhs which were received by the ‘Diet’ Gurdaspur (District Institute of Education and Training) of the Education Department for seminars organized for the training program of teachers under the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA).
Rakesh Gupta was accused of misappropriation of funds by creating bogus bills of 2 lakhs for the tent equipment, stationery at Rs 40,000, expenses for cleanliness and drinking water at Rs 2 lakh while Rs 4 lakh was earmarked as miscellaneous expenditure used in the seminars organized for the training of teachers during the year 2016-17. A case under 120-B was registered by the Vigilance Bureau’s Economic Offenses Wing, Ludhiana on 1 Nov.2002 i.e after about Six years of Complaint. Rakesh Gupta was granted regular bail on 3 January 2023, two months after his arrest in the case.
In a letter issued yesterday by the Special Chief Secretary of the Education Department, Punjab, the services of Rakesh Gupta have been reinstated on the condition of his cooperation in the ongoing vigilance investigation and the departmental investigation of the Education Department against him. Currently, he has not been allotted the post and station.
