In a bold demonstration of solidarity with the farming community, members of the Punjab Youth Congress today took a stand against the treatment of farmers by the Haryana Government and the Central leadership.
The protest saw the burning of mannequins representing Haryana Chief Minister and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, symbolising the deep dissatisfaction with their handling of farmers’ protests.
The Youth Congress is brimming with fury following the tragic demise of Shubhkaran Singh, a young farmer from Punjab’s Bathinda district, who was fatally shot by the Haryana Police at the Khanauri border.
Tear gas shells have been deployed amidst the farmers’ peaceful demonstrations at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders.
Angad Dutta, Secretary of the Punjab Youth Congress, voiced the collective frustration, stating, “The government’s response to peaceful farmers’ protests has been nothing short of draconian. Using tear gas against our farmers, who feed the nation, is a shameful act. The government has built concrete barriers at the borders, treating our annadatas like enemies of the state. This is a dark day in our democracy.”
The Youth Congress’s actions come in response to recent events where farmers seeking to protest peacefully were met with tear gas and water cannons, preventing them from exercising their democratic right to protest.
“The Haryana government, which was supposed to be by the farmers, for the farmers, has now turned against them, treating them like criminals. This is a betrayal of the highest order,” added Dutta.
Dutta further said that It’s deeply shameful that leaders supporting farmers are being beaten and detained, while the government is backing those who label farmers as terrorists.
In light of the events, the Punjab Youth Congress has issued a demand to the Punjab Government to register an FIR against the DC of Ambala for the actions taken against farmers on the Punjab-Haryana border.
“If our demands for justice are not met promptly, we will escalate our protest to the SSP Office in Patiala. The police and the government must be held accountable for the violence unleashed on farmers,” warned Dutta.
Shivam Pathak, President of the Central Jalandhar Youth Congress, also condemned the actions of the Haryana Government and the Centre.
“The silence and inaction of the authorities in the face of such blatant human rights violations are appalling. Those responsible for ordering the firing and use of tear gas against our farmers must be arrested and brought to justice,” Pathak stated.
The Punjab Youth Congress is calling for an immediate end to the violence against farmers and for the government to engage in constructive dialogue with the farming community.
“The government’s current path is unacceptable. We stand with our farmers and demand that their voices be heard and their rights respected,” concluded Angad.
