Packets thrown from jail’s high walls continue, 2 mobiles, banned items seized from 11 packets

The throwing of packets over the high walls of the jail and reaching in of mobiles and banned items. to the prisoners’ end continued in Ferozepur. The unknown persons, taking advantage of the open space at the back of the jail, have thrown 11 packets containing mobiles and other banned items found near ward number 3. Recovery of packets thrown inside the jail, today and earlier also, speaks of a lack of security arrangements in the open space on the back of the jail. During December, around 62 mobiles were recovered from the jail inmates, lying unclaimed or kept hidden in the barracks and to date, around 485 mobiles besides other banned items have been recovered during the current year.

Not only this, as per the latest information in the media, the Punjab and Haryana High Court referring to an affidavit filed by the ADGP Prisons, Justice Shekhawat asserted that it was clear that three accused lodged in the jail were provided phones and SIM cards by co-accused. The mobile phone used by one of them remained active from March 1, 2019, to March 31, 2019, at a single location – Ferozepur Central Jail and as many as, 38,850, calls were made from 1 number. Another mobile remained active in the jail from October 9, 2021, to February 14 this year and 4582 calls were made by using the number.

In the instant throwing incident, a case has been registered under Section 52-A of the Prisons Act on the complaint of Sarabjit Singh Assistant Superintendent, against the unknown persons, on recovery of two mobiles with battery but without SIM Card and 90 packets of tobacco from the 11 packets found thrown inside the jail.
