Amritsar MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla met Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav. He expressed concern over the environmental and health hazards caused by Tung Dhab drain. He demanded a quick and permanent solution from the Union Minister.

MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla told the Union Minister that despite raising this issue repeatedly, no concrete steps have been taken by the state government. He raised this issue several times in state level meetings and in Parliament. Untreated industrial, hospital and domestic sewage is flowing directly into the drain.

He said that the sewage treatment plants of the city are working beyond capacity. The drain has become a dumping ground for industrial chemical waste. The toxic gases emitted from it are harming people’s health. Groundwater is getting contaminated. Domestic electronic appliances are getting damaged in the surrounding colonies.

MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla warned that if action is not taken soon, the condition of Bhagtan Wala and Mananwala drains can also deteriorate. He has made two demands from the Environment Ministry. First, strict action should be taken against dumping of untreated waste. Second, the drain should be covered or connected to a pipeline to prevent poisonous gases. He said that this is not only necessary for the environment but it is very important to take steps for the health of the people.
