Green corridor saves life, first time in Punjab: Aykai Hospital

In an unprecedented act of coordination and solidarity,NOTTO, ROTTO Head Vipin Kaushal, SOTTO head Dr Gagneen kaur sandhu Nodal officer SOTTO punjab, Urology & Transplant department of Aykai Hospital Ludhiana, Fortis Hospital Mohali, and the Punjab Police came together to create the first-ever green corridor between Mohali and Aykai Hospital Ludhiana.

This monumental effort was in aid of transporting a deceased donor kidney swiftly and safely from mohali to Aykai Hospital , marking a significant milestone in the region’s healthcare history. c.

Dr. Baldev Singh Aulakh, Chief Urologist and Transplant Surgeon at Aykai Hospital transplanted this cadaver kidney on 30 year sick kidney failure patient . He said his dream came true after 25 years as he was trained in Cambridge’s addenbrooke’s hospital for this kind of surgery in 1998, kept dreaming & working, AND today result is in front of you. He praised the seamless teamwork and dedication that made this life-saving mission possible. “This is not just a medical achievement; it’s a beacon of hope for many awaiting organ transplants as 2.5 lac patients have kidney failure each year. The efforts of everyone involved today have shown that, together, we can overcome challenges to give the gift of life,” said Dr. Aulakh.

The patients brother said we were depserately waiting for this movement as my brother is young and we don’t have any suitable donor at home ,but thanks to Aykai Hospital who motivated us to register under cadaver so that our dream can come true, when we recived the call form hospita;l we rushed and by Gods grace and Aykai Hospital team efforts our young family member got a second cahnce of life.

The green corridor, meticulously planned and executed on 19/03/24, ensured that the kidney reached its destination in the shortest time possible, demonstrating the incredible power of collaboration in the service of saving lives. The operation’s success speaks volumes about the commitment of all involved parties to healthcare excellence and the well-being of the community.

The initiative highlights the urgent need for organ donations in India, with a particular focus on Punjab, where chronic kidney disease is increasingly prevalent as one brain dead person can save 8 lives. Kidney transplants represent the best hope for those suffering from end-stage kidney disease, offering them a chance at a prolonged and better quality of life.
