Among 22 heritage fairs to be held in Punjab, this time the Basant Mela will be held in Ferozepur as a part of Rangla Punjab celebrations in the state by the Punjab government and Rs.10 lac will be awarded as prize money on different events, said Ranbir Singh Bhullar, MLA Urban Ferozepur adding that this time, Ferozepur’s Basant Mela will be historic.
Basant is a spring time kite flying event during the Basant Panchami festival in the Punjab. It falls on Basant, also called Basant Panchami. According to the Punjabi calendar it is held on the fifth day of the lunar month of Magha (in late January or early February) marking the start of spring.
On the other hand, there have been a number of incidents of cutting of throats with Chinese thread despite a ban in the country and children falling from roofs but this festival continues to be celebrated in this border town with great enthusiasm. The important feature of this festival in Ferozepur is that the residents settled at far off places in India and abroad, prefer to visit their home town to celebrate the kite flying festival.
This year, the Punjab government under the leadership of Bhawant Singh Mann is constantly striving to make the state aware of the rich heritage and culture of the state, promote the tourism sector in the state and make Punjab ‘Rangla Punjab’.
To achieve this objective, the Punjab government will now organize heritage fairs with great pomp to highlight the rich heritage and cultural importance of this place. Under this programme, in all 22 heritage festivals in the state will be held throughout the year and in this context, the Basant Festival will be organized at Ferozepur by arranging various kite flying competitions.
Ranbir Singh Bhullar, MLA Urban, speaking on this programme said, this festival of Ferozepur is famous all over the world and people from all over the country and even settled abroad come to their hometown to enjoy the Basant festival. He said, now Ferozepur’s Basant will be celebrated with more fanfare, when kite flying competitions will be held and the state government will give attractive prizes of Rs.10 lac to the winners.
