Faridkot SP among 3 cops under Vigilance Bureau lens for Rs 20 lakh ‘graft’

Faridkot police has booked 3 cops including an SP and a DSP for taking bribe of Rs. 20 lakh for renaming a person as prime accused in a murder case of 2019.

A case has been registered under Section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Sections 7, 7A, 8 and 13(1)(b) of the Prevention of Corruption Act at Kotkapura Sadar police station on complaint of Sant Gagan Dass of Kot Sukhia.

The accused have been identified as Faridkot SP (investigation) Gagnesh Kumar, deputy superintendent of police (DSP, narcotics) Sushil Kumar, sub-inspector (SI) Khem Chand Prashar, who is posted as in-charge of RTI branch of Faridkot IG office, Jaswinder Singh of Faridkot city and Sant Malkeet Das of Bir Sikhan Wala village in Faridkot.

In November 2019 Lawrence Bishnoi gang had shot dead Baba Dayal Dass.At that time Baba Jarnail Das, the head of another dera branch at Kapurewala village in Moga, was named the mastermind of the murder. Baba Dayal Das was officiating in-charge due to the poor health of the dera head, Baba Hari Das.

Later police declared Jarnail Singh as innocent who has nothing to do with the murder. A report in this regard was filed by Moga DSP Ravinder Singh, which was accepted by the then Faridkot DIG Surjit Singh.

Following report of police, Jarnail Singh applied for bail in December 2022 but Punjab and Haryana High Court rejected police report and directed IG Faridkot range PK Yadav to re investigate the matter.

It was found that trio police officials including SP Ganesh, DSP Sushil, SI Prashar had taken Rs 20 lakh as a bribe and have declared that file regarding murder case has been lost. Action was recommended against all the them.

In his complaint filed with police, Sant Gagan Dass of Kot Sukhia disclosed that he was told that Jarnail Singh had paid Rs. 1 crore to IG Faridkot range to get clean chit in the case and if he wanted that he should be renamed in the case, he will have to pay Rs. 50 lakh. He said that he had paid Rs. 20 lakh as advance in the matter.
