Former minister and senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia today said chief minister Bhagwant Mann was indulging in political vendetta by summoning him for police questioning in an eleven year old case in which his government had failed to present a charge sheet since the last two years.

The SAD leader, who came here to answer the summons of the SIT formed in the case, said the chief minister had ordered his summoning on December 11, two days after he spoke up in favour of a daughter of Punjab whom Bhagwant Mann had abandoned.

Bikram Majithia said he had decided to appear before the SIT as a law abiding citizen even though it was headed by ADGP M S Chhina who was under immense pressure to do the State government’s bidding as action had been recommended against the officer in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s security breach case. “I am not the one to run away like Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal who chose to scoot out of Delhi in the Punjab government’s aircraft along with Mr Bhagwant Mann when summoned by the Enforcement Directorate”.

Asserting that he was inspired by the supreme sacrifices of the two younger Sahibzadas of Guru Gobind Singh whose “shahidi saptah” was being observed across the State, Majithia said “I am committed as a ‘guru ka Sikh’ to fight against this tyrannical government which is trying to intimidate all those who speak against it as well as muzzle the freedom of the press”. Asking the chief minister not to use ADGP Chhina who was to retire on December 31, Majithia said “the chief minister should himself take on the role of chief of SIT and hold the next meeting of the team at his official residence instead of inconveniencing people by making the entire city a Cantonement like he had done today”.

Asserting that in case the State government had any proof against him it should submit the same in the court instead of indulging in a witch hunt against him, Majithia said “the politicization of the entire case as well as the SIT formed to probe it is condemnable”. He also asserted that the conduct of the police officer – former DGP S Chattopadhayay, who had registered the case against him two years back, could be judged from the fact that a SC Committee had recommended a major penalty against him in the PM security breach case.

Speaking about the drug menace in present day Punjab, the SAD leader said the high court, the Border Security Force as well as Governor Banwarilal Purohit had flagged how it had become a danger to society and was resulting in a large number of deaths by drug overdoses. “Instead of tackling this menace which is a making of the AAP government, the chief minister is politicizing the issue”, Majithia added.
