Ferozepur, August 13

There is a continued ongoing security concern at Ferozepur Jail, with the recovery of mobiles and other banned items during the search operation carried out by the Assistant Superintendent.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court is also addressing petitions from convicts in the region regarding denial of parole due to mobile phone possession, questioning if it disqualifies them from parole privileges without conviction. The other point is if the prison system does not have adequate facilities for calling family members for the prisoners, they will feel desperate and may resort to smuggling phones inside the jail. In such a situation, contacting anyone on the phone, a landline facility has to be provided with a recording facility and calling numbers to track, the unwanted activities from the jail.

The purpose of keeping the prisoners behind bars as punishment is lost, with the availability of facilities like phones to remain in contact with the outside world, said a retiree from the jail department.

As per the information, in the search operation, 12 mobiles which include 9 key-pad and 3 touch screens without SIM, 4 battery mobile phones, 2 chargers, 2 adapters, 3 data cables, along with 13 gm intoxicating powder, 83 sachets of tobacco, 20 packets ‘bidis. Two under-trial prisoners namely Gurmit Singh and Manish Kumar and one prisoner Harinder Singh along with unidentified persons have been booked on recovery of these prohibited items. This is the second recovery during August.

Earlier in the year 2024, around 100 mobiles and other banned items have been recovered, which speaks of lacking security arrangements at the entry points.

A case under Sections 52-A and 42 of the Prisons Act has been registered at Ferozepur City police station with further investigation entrusted to Sarwan Singh, IO.
