Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on Sunday attended the last rites of world-renowned marathon runner Fauja Singh. He visited Fauja Singh’s native village Bias to pay homage to the departed soul.
Kataria offered floral tributes at the mortal remains of marathon runner Fauja Singh. Fauja Singh passed away on July 14 in his village after being hit by a speeding vehicle while crossing the road.
Present on this occasion were Cabinet Minister Mohinder Bhagat, Kartarpur MLA Balkar Singh, Adampur constituency in-charge Pawan Kumar Tinu, along with a large number of religious, political, and social personalities.
On this occasion, the Punjab Governor stated that along with being a great marathon runner, Fauja Singh was a symbol of extraordinary courage and determination, who brought laurels to the country at the international level. Praising his remarkable services in the field of athletics, he said that Fauja Singh’s hard work and dedication will continue to inspire the youth to excel in sports.
Kataria, recalling the moments spent with Fauja Singh during the two-day ‘Nasha Mukt-Rangla Punjab’ foot march that began from village Bias in Jalandhar in December 2024, mentioned that even at the age of 114, his enthusiasm was unmatched. He was a source of inspiration not only for the youth but for every section of society. He said that his life will always serve as a guiding light for creating a healthy and drug-free Punjab.
The Governor stated that with Fauja Singh’s demise, not only Punjab but every Punjabi and sports lover across the country and abroad is in mourning. Expressing heartfelt condolences to the family members, he prayed to God to give them strength to bear this loss.
Cabinet Minister Mohinder Bhagat, who also attended the last rites, stated that with Fauja Singh’s passing, not only the family but the sports world has suffered an irreparable loss. He said that through marathon running, Fauja Singh illuminated the name of Punjab and the Sikh community worldwide. Mr. Bhagat mentioned that he will always remain a source of inspiration for the younger generation.
The Cabinet Minister, while expressing grief with the family, prayed to God to give them the strength to bear this immense loss and to grant eternal peace to the departed soul.
On this occasion, DIG Jalandhar Range Naveen Singla, Deputy Commissioner Dr. Himanshu Aggarwal, and SSP Jalandhar (Rural) Harvinder Singh Virk also paid their tributes to the late Fauja Singh.
