New Delhi, June 10

Following his induction as Minister of State in the Modi 3.0 government, reports surfaced that Suresh Gopi wants to relinquish the ministerial position and focus on serving as an MP for Thrissur. Allegedly, he expressed his intention, emphasizing his commitment to his constituency’s welfare and citing prior film commitments.

“I aspire to serve as an MP. I did not pursue this position. I indicated my disinterest earlier. I anticipate stepping down soon. The Thrissur electorate understands this; I will excel in my role as an MP. However, my film commitments remain a priority,” Gopi conveyed in an interview with a regional channel in Delhi, post-swearing-in.

Contrary to these statements, Gopi’s office refuted the claims, denouncing them as misinformation propagated by certain media sections. They assured clarification post the portfolio allocation. Gopi, alongside senior party leader George Kurian, represented the sole BJP nominations from Kerala in the Union Cabinet.

Gopi’s inclusion in the Modi 3.0 government underscores BJP’s strategic focus on Kerala, particularly with impending 2026 elections. His historic victory in the Thrissur parliamentary constituency, traditionally a Left stronghold, marked him as Kerala’s first BJP MP. Gopi triumphed over CPI’s VS Sunil Kumar by a significant margin of 74,000 votes in a three-way contest, with the Congress fielding K Muraleedharan.

During the 2024 Lok Sabha election campaign, Gopi fervently championed his candidacy with the rallying cry, ‘A Union Minister for Thrissur, Modi’s guarantee,’ embodying his commitment to the constituency’s development.
