Strong Earthquake Jolts Jammu-Kashmir and Nicobar Islands: Baramulla Epicenter
Srinagar/Port Blair, February 2, 2026: Strong earthquake tremors struck two distant parts of India this Monday morning. Jammu-Kashmir’s Baramulla district bore the brunt, where early dawn shakes panicked residents still deep in sleep. The National Centre for Seismology recorded the quake at 4.6 on the Richter scale.
In Jammu-Kashmir, tremors hit around 5:35 AM, centered in Baramulla’s Bandipora area. Officials report no casualties or damage so far—a relief in this seismically sensitive Himalayan zone.
Meanwhile, Andaman and Nicobar Islands shook at about 3:30 AM with the same 4.6 intensity. The epicenter lay 10 km underground. Rated Zone V—the world’s highest seismic risk—the islands remain highly vulnerable.
