Chandigarh, March 12
The Punjab and Haryana High Court was informed on Wednesday that Lok Sabha has granted a 54-day leave of absence to Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh, ensuring he retains his parliamentary seat despite his continued detention.
Singh had filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court to allow his participation in Parliament, fearing disqualification due to the 60-day absence rule. Singh is currently detained in Assam under the National Security Act (NSA).
During the hearing, a division bench comprising Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sumeet Goel reviewed a letter from the Lok Sabha Secretariat dated March 11, 2025, which confirmed the leave approval. The court noted that since Singh’s disqualification concerns had been addressed, his petition was effectively resolved.
With this decision, Singh remains a member of Parliament, although he will not be attending Lok Sabha sessions while in detention.
