Mahakumbh 2025: Holy dip taken by more than 2 crore devotees on Makar Sankranti

Lakhs of devotees reached the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj on Tuesday for a holy dip called the “Amrit Snan” on the occasion of Makar Sankranti festival. Over one crore devotees took a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam on Tuesday, the state information department said that the first day of the 2025 Mahakumbh Mela gave the message of “unity and Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”. (the world is one family).

Uttar Pradesh DGP Prashant Kumar said that instructions were given to use all modern technologies and AI tools for crowd and traffic management, underwater monitoring, and fire fighting. “Everything is under control,” he said.

  • Shri Panchayati Akhara, Naya Udasin, and Nirvana will leave the camp at 1.20 pm.
  • Shri Panchayati Nirmal Akhara will be the last to take the Amrit bath. This Akhara will leave the camp at 2.40 pm.

Makar Sankranti known by various names in different parts of the country is observed on January 14 every year. Devotees in several parts of the country perform rituals according to local traditions at different ghats.

The Maha Kumbh-2025, which is Poorna Kumbh, will take place until February 26. Key ‘snan’ dates include January 14 (Makar Sankranti—First Shahi Snan), January 29 (Mauni Amavasya—Second Shahi Snan), February 3 (Basant Panchami—Third Shahi Snan), February 12 (Maghi Purnima), and February 26 (Maha Shivaratri).

Abut 40 crore people are expected to be part of Maha Kumbh in the next 45 days which is equal to the population of the US.
