Jandiala Guru Councilor murder case: Suspect injured in police encounter, two others arrested

In a major breakthrough amidst the ongoing drive to make Punjab a safe and secure state as per directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Amritsar Commissionerate Police has dismantled an organised crime network linked to the foreign-based Kishan Gang with the arrest of its four operatives for their involvement in the murder of Jandiala Guru Councillor Harjinder Singh alias Bahman, said Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav here on Monday.

Those arrested have been identified as Jobanjit Singh alias Joban (22), a resident of village Nangal Guru in Amritsar; Amit (19), a resident of Ghode Shah in Jandiala; Gurpreet Singh alias Don (18), a resident of Nawankot in Amritsar and Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi (22), a resident of Mohalla Shekhupura in Jandiala Guru. Police teams have also recovered one 9MM Glock Pistol and impounded their one Activa Scooter and one Motorcycle, which were used in the crime.

DGP Gaurav Yadav said that within 8 hours, Amritsar Commissionerate Police has arrested four gang operatives, leading to the swift resolution of the Murder Case of Harjinder Singh alias Bahman (Municipal Councillor, Jandiala Guru).

Terming this operation as a crucial step in the ongoing crackdown on inter-gang rivalry and organised crime, the DGP said that investigations are underway to identify additional associates and map backward and forward linkages of the gang.

Sharing operation details, Commissioner of Police (CP) Amristar Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said that following the technical and intelligence leads, police teams have arrested Jobanjit from village Dhunda in Tarn Taran, Gurpreet alias Don and Amit from Hotel near Mahna Singh road in Amritsar.

During a chase near Fatahpur, accused Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi opened fire on the police party, he said, while adding that in self-defence, SHO Chheharta retaliated with his service weapon, injuring Gopi in the right leg. The accused was immediately shifted to Civil Hospital, Amritsar for medical care and is currently under treatment, he added.

The CP said that accused Gurpreet Gopi has a criminal background with cases under NDPS Act have been registered against him. In the recent past, Mother and Sister-in-Law (Bhabi) of Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi were also interrogated in drug case, he added.

A case FIR No. 98 dated 25/05/2025 has already been registered under sections 103, 61(2), 351, 191(2), 191(3) and 190 Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and section 25 of the Arms Act at Police Station Chheharta in Amritsar.
