Ludhiana, July 30
Former Chairman of the Punjab Large Industrial Development Board and former District Congress President, Pawan Dewan, has demanded the immediate cancellation of the India-Pakistan cricket matches scheduled for the upcoming Asia Cup. In a statement issued here today, Dewan also appealed to the Punjab Pradesh Congress (PPCC) President and Ludhiana MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring to raise the matter in the Parliament.
Taking a strong stand on the issue, Dewan said, “In the light of what happened in Pahalgam and subsequent developments, people of the India too are totally opposed to the decision to play with Pakistan. Henceforth, without any second thought, the proposed India-Pakistan cricket matches in Asia Cup during the month of September should not be allowed.” He urged Warring and the Central Government to take a firm stand, stating that terrorism and sports cannot go hand in hand.
Dewan further pointed out that there is widespread public outrage over the crucial issue and strong resentment prevails among the countrymen over the mutual agreement between the BCCI and the Pakistan Cricket Board to play these matches. He said that such tournament will only result in significant financial gains for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), while warning, “This could potentially be used to fund terrorism against India.”
Taking a dig at the NDA Government, Dewan, while referring to the Operation Sindoor, Dewan said, “On one hand, the government is reiterating its commitment to continue the operations against terrorism but on the contrary; preparations are underway to play matches with a country that harbour terror organizations and is breeding ground for terrorism”, he asserted.
