Youth Akali Dal President Sarabjit Singh Jhinjer today criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, stating that maize was a crop full of hope for Punjab’s farmers. However, the AAP’s lack of policy and government negligence have turned that hope into disappointment.
Given the ongoing mistreatment on farmers, students, and Punjabis at large, it is evident that the government has become indifferent to the interests of the farming community. Not only has the government failed to ensure a fair price for locally grown maize, but it has also been unable to stop the influx of maize from other states into Punjab. There is not a single area where the current AAP government seems to be performing successfully. Under their rule, both Punjab and Punjabi’s are suffering—a matter of serious concern for the present and future.
Taking direct aim at the AAP government, Jhinjer said, “The inaction of the Bhagwant Mann-led government on the maize issue clearly shows they have no concern for the farmers. The promises made before coming to power have turned out to be false and meaningless. Today, farmers are disheartened because their crops are not fetching fair prices, and there are no government schemes in place to support them. Agriculture in Punjab is no longer viable due to these policies, but the AAP cabinet seems completely disconnected from these issues.”
Raising serious questions, Jhinjer asked, “Why hasn’t the government stopped the import of maize from other states? Why was there no prior assurance given to our farmers? Why aren’t our farmers getting the rightful price for their maize? Instead of supporting the backbone of our state, the government continues to ignore them.”
Jhinjer also strongly criticized Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian for ignoring the farmers’ demands. He said, “Instead of addressing the legitimate concerns of farmers, the minister has shamefully told them to join politics and get votes to solve their issues themselves. This is disgraceful!”
He further stated, “We are not just demanding answers—we need real solutions. The condition of Punjab’s agriculture has already crumbling due to the current government’s neglect. Any further delay in addressing the crisis may push farmers toward suicides, which would be a tragedy for Punjab. Therefore, it is essential that the government immediately begins acquiring maize at Minimum Support Price (MSP) and imposes a ban on maize imports from other states.”
