The General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee, former Union Minister, former state president of Haryana Congress, member of the Congress Working Committee, and in-charge of Uttarakhand, Kumari Selja, said that the problem of substance abuse in the state has taken a severe form, but the BJP-JJP alliance government is only focused on fulfilling its political interests. The situation in many districts has become worse, and the big drug traffickers are not being brought to justice by the police. The directives of the Punjab and Haryana High Court are not being implemented.

In a statement released to the media, Kumari Selja said that photos of youth who have lost their lives either due to drug addiction or suicide with a syringe in their hands are going viral every day. The age group most affected is between 18 to 35 years. The problem is more acute in areas bordering Punjab. The most affected districts include Fatehabad, Sirsa, Faridabad, Rohtak, Ambala, Gurugram, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Panipat, Hisar, Jind, and Kaithal. The Haryana police figures indicate that in 2023, 3757 FIRs related to drug trafficking and purchase were registered, while 5330 accused in drug trafficking were arrested. This means that about 10 FIRs are registered and 14 accused are arrested every day. This figure reflects the alarming situation of the drug trade in the state. In many cases, before reaching the police station, bribes are taken, and the cases are settled.

Kumari Selja said that taking note of the drug cases, the High Court had given some directions to the state government. These included providing compensation of Rs. 5 lakhs to the family of a drug addict who died by suicide, filing a money laundering case against the supplier when filing an FIR for drug possession, opening drug rehabilitation centers in each district, appointing nodal officers to spread awareness against drugs in every educational institution, and deploying police personnel in plain clothes in their vicinity.

The former Union Minister said that canceling licenses for selling alcohol to minors, forming an SIT against narcotic medicines, maintaining a database and records of people involved in the trade of narcotic medicines, and other directives were also given by the High Court. However, the BJP-JJP alliance government has ignored most of them. This has cast a constant shadow of the drug mafia and the dark dangers of drugs on the youth of the state. The problem has spread to such an extent that people have started calling the state Flying Haryana.
