Haryana Transport and Energy Minister Anil Vij on Friday inspected the rising water levels of the Tangri River in Ambala Cantonment and directed the district administration to begin evacuation announcements for residents living in vulnerable areas.

The Tangri River crossed the danger mark this morning, with an inflow of 30,000 cusecs, posing a serious risk to nearby settlements. During his visit, Minister Vij instructed officials to remain on high alert and ensure timely precautionary measures.

Speaking to the media, Vij said heavy rainfall in the hills had led to an unusual surge of over 30,000 cusecs into the Tangri River. He noted that although efforts were made before the monsoon to deepen the river, only 25 percent of the work could be completed. The remaining excavation will resume once the rainy season ends.

Expressing hope that the water would pass safely through Ambala, he said the administration remains vigilant. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed in Ambala Cantonment, and boats are ready to tackle any emergency situation. Residents living along the river’s catchment area are being urged to shift to safer places with essential belongings.

Vij also highlighted that while the Tangri River has overflowed in previous years, this time the partial deepening of the riverbed has helped in allowing water to flow more smoothly.

During the inspection, he directed the Irrigation, Police, and Municipal Council departments to coordinate closely and accelerate relief efforts. Standing on the Tangri River bridge at Jagadhari Road, he reviewed the water flow and received updates from Irrigation Department officials before issuing instructions to the Ambala Cantonment SDM and other officers to ensure public safety and effective management.
