In a historic move, the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) Ropar, under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, has been conferred the status of an Institution deemed to be University.
This announcement follows the issuance of the notification under section 3 of the UGC Act. The NIELIT Ropar is the main Campus of the Deemed to be University with its 11 constituent units at Aizawl, Agartala, Aurangabad, Calicut, Gorakhpur, Imphal, Itanagar, Kekri, Kohima, Patna and Srinagar.
Dr M M Tripathi, DG of NIELIT is the first Vice Chancellor OF THE NIELIT Deemed to be University. At Ropar Campus, PhD in three areas, five M.Tech Programmes (IoT and Sensor Systems, Automative Electronics, Cyber Forensics & Info. Security, Data Engineering, Artificial Intelligence), one B.Tech in CSE with AI/ML and one 3-year Diploma programme in CSE will be launched from inaugural session 2024-25 and more programmes will be added in subsequent sessions.
This prestigious milestone marks NIELIT as the first and only organization under MeitY to achieve Deemed to be University status. This recognition is a testament to NIELIT’s unwavering commitment to excellence in Information Technology and its dedication to providing world-class education and training. It underscores the alignment of NIELIT’s objectives with the overarching goals of MeitY, aimed at fostering innovation and excellence in IT education and research, Digital India, and Make in India initiatives.

NIELIT Ropar, with its roots dating back to 1978, alongside erstwhile CEDTIs and DOEACC, has a rich and illustrious history of pioneering advancements and quality assurance in Information Technology and Electronics. Originally established as the Regional Computer Centre (RCC), NIELIT Ropar embarked on a journey with the primary objective of automating and digitizing government organizations, boards, and PSUs in the Northern Region.
