Born into a modest background in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar, Virendra Kumar began his journey by assisting his father at their cycle repair shop as a child. As he grew, he took on more responsibilities, eventually running the shop himself. Despite facing challenges, especially as a Dalit youth, Kumar pursued his education, eventually earning a PhD in child labour.
His entry into politics came in 1996 when he won his first Lok Sabha election. Since then, Kumar’s political career has been on a steady ascent. Serving four terms as the MP for Sagar, he continued his winning streak from the Tikamgarh constituency after its creation through delimitation. Now, at 74, he has returned as a cabinet minister in Narendra Modi’s third term as Prime Minister, entrusted with the Ministry for Social Justice and Empowerment.
Expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP chief JP Nadda for the opportunity, Kumar emphasized his commitment to grassroots work. He highlighted his humble upbringing and stated that his lifestyle remains ordinary despite his ministerial position. For him, this role is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those in need.
Asked about his appointment in light of his background and struggles, Kumar reiterated his belief in leading a simple life. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a connection with the common people, asserting that their trust is paramount. Kumar’s recent electoral victory, with a significant margin of over 4 lakh votes, speaks about this trust.
Regarding his priorities for the first 100 days in office, Kumar outlined various targets, including expanding scholarship programmes and constructing hostels. Additionally, he emphasized the ministry’s plans to support marginalized communities such as transgender individuals, ragpickers, and senior citizens. Kumar also mentioned the expansion of Garima Greh facilities, which provide essential support to transgenders, aiming to establish one in each state across the country.
