Amid the devastating floods across Punjab, heavy rains in Chandigarh have also triggered a crisis. The water level of Sukhna Lake has risen above the danger mark, forcing authorities to open its flood gates.
According to reports, a bridge leading to the flood gates collapsed under the pressure of gushing water. The flow was so strong that the bridge structure and surrounding barriers were swept away.
Several areas of Chandigarh are waterlogged, prompting the Traffic Police to issue an advisory. Traffic movement has been severely affected on:
Dakshin Marg (Dhanas),
Road behind ISBT-43,
Dakshin Marg (Sector 23-D),
Makhan Majra,
Road dividing Sector 10/11 (near Sector 10),
Roads in Sectors 15-A and 15-B.
Police have urged commuters to exercise caution and use alternative routes.
The Meteorological Department has issued a Red Alert for Chandigarh.
In view of the worsening weather and flood situation, the administration has ordered the closure of all schools and colleges in the city till September 7.
