Chandigarh, November 24: Aiming to position IT City as Punjab’s most vibrant and future-ready employment hub, the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) is preparing to launch an ambitious programme of world-class landscaping, streetscaping, and urban beautification across the region. The initiative is designed not only to elevate the physical environment of the city but also to strengthen Mohali’s image as a premier destination for global technology companies, skilled professionals, and investors.
A Rapidly Growing Technology Cluster Spread Across 1,722 Acres
Spanning an impressive 1,722 acres across Sectors 66-B, 82-A, 83-A, and 101-A—strategically located along the rapidly developing Airport Road—IT City Mohali is witnessing a swift transformation into a thriving centre for innovation and enterprise. Over the past few years, it has emerged as one of North India’s most promising technology clusters, supported by modern infrastructure, strong connectivity, and proximity to the international airport.
The region already houses more than 80 IT companies, Global Capability Centres (GCCs), and allied businesses operating in high-growth domains, including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, KPO services, data engineering, and software development. With 80 commercial plots allotted so far and a built-up potential of nearly 57 lakh sq. ft., IT City is expected to generate around 1.14 lakh direct jobs and 5 lakh indirect jobs in the next two years.
Industry leaders and GMADA Collaborate on Urban Design Vision
Recently, members of the Mohali IT City IT Companies Association met GMADA chief administrator Vishesh Sarangal to discuss the proposed beautification and landscaping plan. The discussions centred on enhancing the main stretch from Airport Road to IT City and improving internal roads and public spaces across the project area. GMADA is set to appoint a specialised consultant to prepare the detailed design blueprint.
During the meeting it was stressed the importance of building a visually striking and globally competitive urban environment. Taking cues from Delhi Aerocity and Singapore’s polished cityscape, it was recommended that the development of signature roundabouts, landscaped green belts, curated medians, pedestrian-friendly walkways, and modern wayfinding signage.
With this collaborative initiative, GMADA and the IT City Association aim to convert the IT City corridor into a vibrant, internationally recognisable gateway that reflects the spirit of innovation and growth driving Punjab’s IT sector.
International-Standard Development and Next Steps
A senior GMADA official added that the Authority seeks to develop the corridor to international standards, giving the area a unique identity while fostering a sense of community among professionals from across the globe. One key outcome of the meeting was GMADA’s decision to initiate the tender process to appoint a world-class architect to design and execute the beautification works.
