Chandigarh, November 21: A Mohali special court has issued arrest warrants against Gajpat Singh Grewal, the brother-in-law of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia, in a high-profile disproportionate assets investigation.
The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) alleges that Grewal played a “pivotal role” in a conspiracy to help Majithia acquire and conceal assets far beyond his declared income.
According to the court order, Grewal repeatedly disregarded official notices, prompting the VB to demand his arrest.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Inderpal Singh, overseeing the probe, told the court that Grewal had not only failed to cooperate with investigators but also obstructed the inquiry.

The VB application highlighted his lack of legal protection—no bail application is pending, and no court has stayed his arrest.
Judge Nitika Verma agreed, granting the warrant and making it returnable by November 29, 2025.

Grewal, a resident of Sangrur district who also spends time in New Delhi, was formally named in the FIR against Majithia. This development comes amid a sweeping VB case against Majithia, who was arrested by the bureau in June 2025.

The FIR alleges that Majithia laundered ₹540 crore of “drug money” and amassed ill-gotten wealth — reportedly more than ₹700 crore, disproportionate to his declared income.

Investigators say the probe draws on a 2018 special task force report and a 2021 Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) case.
The FIR accuses Majithia under the Prevention of Corruption Act and charges of criminal conspiracy.

Further, the VB has filed a detailed special report linking Grewal to the alleged financial maneuvering, and sought to upgrade the charges to include Section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.
This case is part of a broader legal onslaught. In August 2025, the VB submitted a mammoth 40,000-page chargesheet against Majithia, including statements from more than 200 witnesses.

In early November, Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria granted sanction for Majithia’s prosecution under the Prevention of Corruption Act — a necessary legal step given his former ministerial status.
Meanwhile, Grewal’s absence from earlier summons has drawn official rebukes. In mid-September, the VB issued a fresh notice under Section 179 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, ordering him to appear at Vigilance Bhawan in Mohali — a summons he reportedly ignored.
Political tensions are running high. While Majithia’s supporters accuse the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of a vendetta, the VB insists this is a legitimate anti-corruption operation.

For its part, the SAD has condemned the probe as politically motivated.
As of now, Grewal has not responded publicly to the arrest warrant. The case is expected to intensify in the coming days, with his potential arrest looming and key dates already fixed by the court.
