Chandigarh, December 24: Under “Yudh Nashiyan Virudh” 2025, the police registered 29,784 FIRs, arrested 39,867 suspects and seized a record 2,021 kg of heroin — the highest-ever in a year. Additional seizures included 26 kg ICE, 698 kg opium, 35,000 kg poppy husk, 55.78 lakh intoxicant pills/capsules and Rs 16.81 crore in drug money. The total value of this heroin seizure is Rs 10,000 crore.
The state police achieved an 88% conviction rate — one of the nation’s highest — with 5,901 convictions out of 6,728 decided cases. The state accounted for nearly two-thirds of India’s heroin seizures, 25% of national NDPS arrests and 20% of NDPS cases. For prevention, 23,940 individuals were admitted to de-addiction centres, and 59,840 referred to OOAT clinics.
Proactive measures neutralised ISI-sponsored terror threats. Cops solved 12 incidents, including hand grenade attacks and an RPG strike on a police station, arresting 50 module members. Seven additional modules were busted.
From 131 arrests, seizures included nine rifles, 188 revolvers/pistols, 12 IEDs, 11.62 kg RDX, 54 hand grenades, 32 detonators, four RPGs, one rocket launcher sleeve, two timer switches, three walkie-talkies and eight remote devices.
Anti-gangster drive
The Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) and field units dismantled 416 gangster/criminal modules, arresting 992 offenders. They seized 620 weapons and 252 vehicles used in crimes.
Coordination with the CBI yielded 11 Red Notices and two Blue Notices for foreign-based criminals. The Punjab Police geo-located Anmol Bishnoi, leading to his deportation. Parminder Singh, alias Pindi (terror-linked), Sukhdev Kumar, alias Manish Bedi, and Sajan Masih, alias Goru, were also deported or arrested.
Major crimes fell compared to 2024: murders by 8.7% (745 to 680), kidnappings/abductions by 10.6% (1,770 to 1,583), snatchings by 19.6% (2,321 to 1,866), and thefts by 34.3% (6,714 to 4,410). Increases under Excise Act, Arms Act and NDPS Act reflected aggressive enforcement.
Anti-drone systems were deployed in Tarn Taran, Ferozepur and Amritsar Rural. 2,367 CCTV cameras are being installed at 585 border locations (Rs 49.58 crore cost). 896 personnel from SOG Hit, Ghatak, SSG and ARP teams bolster border districts.
In cyber fraud, Punjab froze Rs 79.96 crore (19% of Rs 418.29 crore defrauded) — ranking fourth nationally.
The Sadak Surakhiya Force reduced fatalities from 4,829 (2023) to 4,759 (2024) and accidents from 6,269 to 6,063, placing Punjab among nine states/UTs with decline in both.
