Punjab Set for Permanent DGP: UPSC Demands Panel After Supreme Court Rebuke

Punjab’s prolonged ‘Acting DGP’ practice nears end. Following SC orders, UPSC wrote to Punjab govt Feb 18 seeking senior IPS officers’ panel for permanent DGP appointment within 10 days.

SC Rebuke Impact

Feb 5: SC slammed states for extended acting DGPs, directing UPSC immediate action. Punjab’s Gaurav Yadav (1992 batch) acting since July 2022—3.5 years.

Selection Process (Prakash Singh Guidelines)

1. State sends senior IPS list to UPSC.

2. UPSC prepares 3-name panel based on seniority/record.

3. Govt picks one as permanent DGP.

• Gaurav Yadav: Current acting DGP, strong contender.
