NCERT Major Decision: Bans Sales of Controversial Class 8 Book, Seeks SC Pardon

NCERT halted sales/distribution of Class 8 Social Science textbook Part 2 after Supreme Court objections to Chapter 4 (“Role of Judiciary”) on judicial corruption, issuing unconditional apology for “inadvertent error of judgment” late night.

CJ Surya Kant took suo motu cognizance; SC slammed judiciary portrayal as undermining constitutional institution. Education Ministry directed immediate hold—NCERT complied, recalling ~225k stock copies (2.24L from 22.5L printed).​

NCERT Response

Statement: “Holds judiciary in highest esteem as Constitution upholder.” Chapter to be fully excised, rewritten post-review with authorities for 2026-27 session. Objective: Strengthen constitutional literacy, institutional respect.
