India’s Largest Defense Deal: Approval for 114 Rafale Jets and 6 P-8I Surveillance Aircraft

New Delhi: February 12, 2026

A historic step was taken in India’s defense sector today. The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has given the green light to procure 114 Rafale fighter jets and 6 P-8I Poseidon maritime surveillance aircraft to significantly boost the Indian Air Force and Navy’s capabilities. This is being regarded as one of India’s biggest defense deals to date.

Need and Importance of Rafale Jets

Amid escalating challenges along borders with China and Pakistan, the Indian Air Force (IAF) urgently requires modern aircraft.

  • Squadron Shortfall: The IAF currently has only 30 squadrons, while at least 42 are needed for national security. These 114 new jets will provide 6-7 additional squadrons.

  • Lethal Technology: The Rafale is a 4.5-generation ultra-modern jet equipped with AESA radar, long-range Meteor missiles, and SCALP stealth cruise missiles. It excels in air-to-air and air-to-ground precision strikes.

Approval granted for 6 new P-8I Poseidon aircraft for maritime surveillance. The Indian Navy already operates 12 such planes, which have proven highly effective in monitoring enemy submarines and activities in the Indian Ocean.

Next Steps?

Following DAC approval, the proposals will go to the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) for final clearance. Notably, French President Emmanuel Macron visits India on February 17, during which significant progress on this deal is expected.

Experts’ view: This decision counters China’s increasing LAC activities. Rafale has already proven its mettle during ‘Operation Sindoor’.
